Coming Up: Dothan Downtown Tours

Dothan Downtown Tours

If you like to kick off October with a little grown-up ghostly fun, then Dothan Downtown Tours is right up your alley. After all, what could be more intriguing than a historical walking tour with spooky twists and local lore tying into something that is “not just another walk in the dark?”

More History Less Fright

The tours start today, Friday, October 2, and are happening each Friday and Saturday night all month long from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

These walking tours cater to an older crowd, with historical content and subject matter suited for ages 13 and up. Dothan Downtown Tours, operated by Adela Haunted Tours, are meant to be educational in nature. But there are more than a few ghostly tales about downtown Dothan that the website says are sure “to enlighten you about the shady history” of the town.

The walking adventure takes about two hours, and guests can anticipate learning some little eerie tidbits about the town that they didn’t know before!

One Spine-Tingling Local Legend

Dothan Downtown Tours would not be complete without a walk by the Penney Building, also known as the Colby Building. Built in 1930, the building is  a 31,000 square-foot, three-story building that originally housed a J.C. Penney’s.

The first two floors are currently in use and are home to Bella’s and Colby restaurants. The third floor that once operated as offices for attorneys and such now sits empty. The Dothan Eagle did a story on the building in 2015 and employees of the restaurants had some interesting things to say.

A woman was allegedly murdered on the third floor in the 1950s. Her spirit reportedly lingers today and enjoys spooking employees by turning lights on and off, making dishes crash to the floor, swaying lamps, and even whispering your name.

How to Reserve a Spooky Spot

Reservations must be made in advance with a ticket purchase online. Tour staff recommends that you arrive 15 minutes before the 5:30 p.m. tour begins. You must have a photo ID and proof of ticket purchase at check in. Ticket prices on average range from $20 for adults to $12 for seniors.
